During the Mystic Market this weekend, I spoke with a lovely shopper who said something that really made me pause. She mentioned that she only liked to visit Dragonfly during special events because she felt intrusive walking through while someone was getting their hair done.
That simple comment brought me right back to what I now call our in-between years — that awkward time when Dragonfly was no longer a full salon, but I was still doing hair in the corner of our big crystal room. It was a strange mix of worlds… scissors and sacred space. I loved working among the energy of the crystals, but I also knew it wasn’t the long-term vision.
Eventually, I moved my little station to the café area — better, but still not quite right. People still had to pass through, and it didn’t feel like the sanctuary I wanted my clients to experience.
Then one day, my brilliant daughter Darya had an idea:
“Mom, what if we move your station to the other side — where your photography setup used to be?”
At first, I laughed. It was dark, carpeted, and not at all inviting. But with a little paint, new flooring, and our shared vision, it transformed into the perfect little creative sanctuary — a peaceful corner for my artistry surrounded by light and love.
That one change sparked a full metamorphosis. We started painting, redecorating, installing new shelving, and designing custom tables — all while keeping our doors open every single day. We did it ourselves, joyfully, and watched our vision unfold before our eyes. The Dragonfly you see today is the masterpiece of that love and labor — a space where art, spirit, and community truly intertwine.
It made me realize — maybe there are others who haven’t seen our transformation. Some people still wander in and ask, “Did you just move in?”
